1~Storm (XIX)

Today on theAbysmal Calendar (Jun 9 2024) marks day 1~XIX (Storm) on the 260-Day Calendar. This Calendar organizes the days by measures of 13 as denoted by the number, as well as 20 glyphs indicated by the Roman numeral.

This period of 13 days ends with a schism between the Fixed Year and Wandering Year calendars (see All the Years for definitions). While these two variations of the year have overlapped since Jun 22 2020, they diverge again on Jun 21 2024, the Leap Day.

The Fixed Year skips the Leap Day, which falls between 12~X (Coyote) and 13~XI (Raccoon), whereas with the Wandering Year, Jun 21 2024 falls on 13~XI (Raccoon). These two calendars will be off by 1 day until the next Leap Day, when they will be off by 2 days, and so on for 1460 years or so when they come back around to alignment.

This signifies another new year of sorts, the beginning of another cycle of 260 days. It’s generated by the two cycles, 13 and 20, which is something that we don’t experience with the Gregorian. The 7 day week is one cycle, but we don’t observe a second regular period of days to coincide with it. The coincidence of 13 and 20, however, generates a great number of regular patterns, particularly when associated with the 365 days of the year.

The glyphs gain meaning as events unfold. A simple example would be glyph IX (Moon). Notice when it coincides with New & Full Moons, and especially eclipses, as well as Mondays (NB Such a triple date occurs at the beginning of a 19-year lunar cycle in theAbysmal system).

In many Mesoamerican systems, the 15th glyph is Eagle. The Eagle is a powerful creature to the Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Woodlands as well, so it might be a more suitable animal for this glyph. While the numbers provide a common framework, the glyphs can vary from community-to-community. Unfortunately, the imperial eagle of Rome, Holy Roman Empire, Russia, & the USA is a symbol with which I’m far more familiar, and don’t wish to perpetuate in theAbysmal system.

Goshawk, short for goose hawk, don’t hunt geese. Goshawk is paired with tomorrow’s glyph, XVI (fisher). Fishers don’t fish, and Goshawk don’t hunt geese. This seems like an unlikely pairing, yet every time these days come around, something else about their relationship presents itself.

More feasting and dancing, beloveds.
