Calendars Summary

theAbysmal Calendar’s web of time

It’s been a curious 20 years since this mess began. It’s no less messy for all of that.

theAbysmal Calendar is better described as a series of synchronized calendar systems that are harmonized with other world calendars. As a result, following theAbysmal over the years has rewired how my brain experiences the flow of time.

the Gregorian Calendar is the Datrix, and theAbysmal Calendar is the red pill (although there are lots of other red pills, as it were).

illustration of five concentric rings of circles. The central circle is divided into four colours: blue at bottom, green at left, yellow at top, and red at right. The ring around it consissts of four circles coloured turquoise, olive, orange, and violet. The next ring consists of eigth circles which consist of intermediary colours between the blue, turquois, green, olive, yellow, orange, violet, and blue. The next rings are 32, 64, and 256 circles, each in intermediary shades of the previous colours.

theAbysmal Years

Generally, there are two ways to arrange a 365-day year: a leap day creates a calendar year fixed to the seasons (i.e. Solstices & Equinoxes); no leap day creates what is called a “vague year”, which I prefer to call a “wandering year”.

The Fixed Year always begins on Jun 22 (Jun 21 is the Leap Day).
The Wandering Year begins one day earlier every 4 years.

Within each 365-day year, there are several variations that synchronize with one another: 364+1, 363+2, 362+3, 361+4, 360+5. It’s possible to have these arranged as continuous periods of time, i.e. 364-, 363-, 362-, 361-, and 360-day years. These will begin one day earlier every four years like the 365-day Wandering Year, however, they will further fall behind by 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 days relative to the 365-day year. These are referred to collectively as the Scattering Years.

Using Jun 22 2012 as our starting point, we get the following new years:

Furthermore, we’ve got the 2 symbolic calendars, i.e. the 256- and 260-day calendars. These are generally synchronized with the 365-day year. The colours generated by the 256-day calendar are consistently assigned to the 20 glyphs of the 260-day calendar: i.e. green Turtle, blue Wind, red Night, yellow Web, etc.

There is a variation, where every four years, the Leap Day is assigned a colour from the 256-day calendar, such that the glyphs then change colours every four years, i.e.

green Turtle, blue Turtle, red Turtle, yellow Turtle over the course of 16 years. This is called the Scintillating Year.

Finally, the 360 shades of colour assigned to the days of the year is referred to as the Prismatic Year.
